Study System

AL Sham private University follows the credit hours system. The following are some of the terms related to this system:

Credit Hour System:

Is a system adopted in most international universities, based on determining the number of credit hours that the student must study and succeed in them by fulfilling the minimum level determined by the university regulations and instructions, which is considered a perquisite for graduation in any of its departments, The credit hours are basically distributed in principle to classes and students are free to choose the courses required from them and to progress in their studies depending on their needs and aptitude, and under the guidance of the academic mentor within the minimum and maximum limits of credit hours allowed to register in each semester.

Credit Hour:

It is a unit of measurement for the volume of curriculum the student takes in one course during a regular semester, which extends in time to (16 weeks). The number of credit hours per course is defined by summing the number of theoretical and practical hours.

Semester:

The time period between the beginning and the end of course attendance  including the examination period and the duration of which is (16) weeks. The summer course is optional and lasts eight weeks, including examination days, according to the academic calendar annually determined by the university council.

Syllabus :

the Course curriculum studied by the student over a semester , the volume of which  is the number of credit hours set out in the course plan of the department or major.

Prerequisite:

The course the student must take before another one that is associated with it , for instance a student can't study English (1) course before English (2), in case of any  , students registration and mark in that course will be cancelled by the admission and registration office .

Academic Advising:

Academic guidance is an essential element in the life of the university student, a faculty member is assigned as an academic supervisor for each student and the student should benefit from his advice. The academic advisor's mission will be as follows:

• Acquaint  and remind the student of the University's systems and policies.

• Introducing the student to his / her Curriculum study plan and how to implement it optimally.

• Adherence to deadlines set during the academic  year for extension and registration processes.

• Study the file of the student and follow up the progress of their studies at the university and provide advice to him and help him to choose the good courses to be registered in .

Academic Adviser  (Mentor):

A faculty staff member chosen by the academic department in the college to guide the student through out the process of course registration in each semester and monitoring their academic performance starting from enrollment until graduation.

Practical Training:

The applied practice of what the student  theoretical and practical studies in their academic disciplines in a work sites such as: institutions, management, companies, universities, governmental and international organizations, factories and justice.

Duration of study:

The time period spent by the student at  the university to fulfill all graduation requirements within a regular academic quorum. According  to Article 49 of the Academic Accreditation Rules for Private Universities, the average length of time spent by the student at the university to attain the degree : six years at the Faculty of Medicine, and five years at the Faculties of Dentistry, Pharmacy and Information Technology  Engineering including all its specialization.

Academic Degree:

Graduation certificate which is granted to the student after fulfilling graduation requirements and is called a bachelor's degree. The student is a graduate after success in all the courses of the approved study plan. If the student has a cumulative average of 2 - 2 points or more and does not exceed the maximum allowed years, he / she will be awarded a certificate, Syria.

Graduation Assessment:

When Calculating the total final assessment at graduation , the university adopts the following criteria:

Student’s AGPA upon graduation is calculated as follows:

Percent mark = (final point upon graduation x 20) + 20

Academic Semester GPA:

The GPA in a certain academic semester for each student is defined by summing all point marks at the end of each semester, which is the sum of the grade points attained by the student in the courses he / she attended during the semester after multiplying them by the number of credit hours assigned to the courses divided by the total number of credit hours studied by the student during the semester.

AGPA Accumulative Grade Point Average :

The total (AGPA) for each student is defined at the end of the semester following the first semester of the student's enrollment the same way the Semester GPA is defined, taking into account all the courses that the student has attended since the beginning of his / her studies, with the exception of courses that have been repeated calculating the courses with the higher mark.

Grade Class Equivalent:

Grade Class Equivalent for the point grades attained by the students as a total mark grade at any course as follows:

Student study Ranking (for Military service Recruitment purposes):

According Higher Education Council resolution No. 500 dated 25/9/2010, Student registered for bachelor degree in the faculties of the university shall be classified a second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth year student if they successfully completes the study of the assigned  credit hours according to the following table:
